Settlement Includes $395 Million Compensation Fund and Meaningful Institutional Reforms

Justice Law Collaborative is honored to have represented nine survivors in the recently announced settlement involving the Archdiocese of San Francisco, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of accountability for hundreds of individuals who experienced childhood sexual abuse.

The settlement establishes a $395 million trust to compensate 530 survivors while also requiring important institutional reforms designed to increase transparency, strengthen child protection, and help prevent future abuse. Among the reforms are maintaining a public list of accused clergy, documenting the Church’s knowledge of abuse allegations and its response, and implementing measures intended to better protect children moving forward.

While no legal resolution can erase the profound trauma survivors have endured, this settlement represents more than financial compensation. It reflects years of courage by survivors who came forward to tell their stories, demand accountability, and seek meaningful institutional change.

“Our clients showed remarkable courage by speaking the truth and demanding accountability,” said Kelly Guagenty, Partner at Justice Law Collaborative. “This settlement recognizes the importance of hearing survivors, confronting institutional failures, and implementing reforms that better protect children in the future. While the legal process cannot undo what happened, it can help create lasting change—and that is what so many survivors hope to achieve.

“This settlement represents 530 survivors whose experiences can no longer be ignored. Justice Law Collaborative is honored to represent nine of those individuals. We are deeply grateful for the trust they placed in us and for the courage they demonstrated throughout this process. We hope this resolution not only provides a measure of accountability for the past, but also reinforces the responsibility of institutions to protect children and respond appropriately when abuse occurs.”

The settlement follows years of litigation and mediation after the Archdiocese of San Francisco filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023 in response to numerous childhood sexual abuse claims. It also reflects the growing national movement toward institutional accountability and expanded legal remedies for survivors.

Justice Law Collaborative remains committed to representing survivors of childhood sexual abuse and institutional abuse across the country. The firm believes that meaningful justice extends beyond financial recovery—it includes transparency, accountability, and reforms that help protect future generations.

“We are grateful to our clients for trusting us with their stories,” Guagenty added. “Their resilience has helped create meaningful change that will extend far beyond this case.”
