Dr. Derrick Todd Indicted: Grand jury hands down criminal indictment on two counts of rape
UPDATE:
January 22, 2025
The Middlesex County District Attorney's Office announced last Thursday that Dr. Derrick Todd, the disgraced Boston rheumatologist who formerly practiced at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Charles River Medical Associates, was indicted of two counts of rape.
He was arraigned Friday and pled not guilty.
Justice Law Collaborative co-founder and partner Paula Bliss, who represents victims of Todd shared:
"The news of Derrick Todd’s indictment provides a resounding moment of validation for the patients he sexually assaulted and the brave survivors who came forward with the truth of this so-called medical professional’s deplorable conduct. The amount of trust we place in our doctors cannot be overstated. The relationship between healthcare providers and patients is sacrosanct. It should go without saying that when seeking medical care, patients are often at their most vulnerable – physically, mentally, and emotionally. This unique dynamic allows predators in positions of power to exploit patients – a reality of which Derrick Todd took full advantage.
Boston is home to some of the nation’s most respected hospitals and medical facilities. People travel from the furthest reaches of the globe seeking care here. They rightfully expect and believe they will receive superior medical treatment. However, when egregious breaches of that trust occur, it leaves a lifelong scar on the patient and a black eye on the industry.
Derrick Todd has not only permanently harmed those he abused, but he has also sullied the reputation of Massachusetts medicine. As such, we are encouraged by the knowledge that he is being held accountable for his actions and that he will be punished to the fullest extent of the law."
Background on the case:
Todd resigned from Brigham and Women's after an investigation by the hospital following complaints brought by two physicians in April of 2023 regarding improper exams completed by Dr. Todd. Because patient complaints soon followed, Todd agreed to step down and to stop practicing medicine in September 2023 pending a full investigation. Both civil and criminal charges have since been brought against Todd, including a class action lawsuit led by Lubin & Meyer.
